INSTALLATION QUESTIONS

How much space do I need for the Titan Actuator? What are the minimum dimensions?

• You’ll need 3″ clearance to each side from the center of the valve, 1″ clearance between the pipe and the wall, and at least 1.25″ clearance between the valve handle and the pipe. The valve needs to be a ball valve between 0.5″ – 1.25″.

What are the dimensions of the ZAC36? How big is the device?

• 5.5″ long x 2.25″ wide x 5″ tall

What size pipe will the clamps fit around?

• 1.25″. Is your pipe larger? Reach out to us about an extension kit for the ZAC36 to accommodate larger pipes/valves.

How far do the clamps open?

• The clamps open to a dimension of 2″. If you have an installation outside of the normal, we have larger clamps available for purchase separately. Please reach out to our team to inquire.

What size nut can the provided fork accomodate?

• Installed fork can accommodate up to an 18mm nut

Is the power adapter provided a UL listed device?

• The power supply for the Titan Actuator is ETL certified, which is equivalent of UL certification.
• Power Cord Length: 9.5 feet

Can I extend the power supply of the ZAC36 Actuator?

• Yes. You can use a simple extension cord between the power supply and outlet it will be plugged into. We do not recommend using a cable connector extender in the installation as the total length of the cable causes the voltage to drop which can damage the power adapter. The DC side of the installation (cable from actuator to power adapter) should not be extended. 

What should I use if I’m installing the ZAC36 outdoors?

• The ZAC36 is rated IP66 for outdoor use. If you need to extend the power supply, you could use a weatherproof box in the set-up like the SockItBox. You may need a waterproof cord to extend to the box as well depending on your set-up. Remember to lock the Z-Wave button to prevent the actuator from being accidentally triggered by animals or children: hold the Z-Wave button until 3 beeps sound, release the button, then immediately after, tap the button 3 times (it will flash green and beep once each time you touch it). Perform the same sequence to unlock the Z-Wave button.

When should I use the included spacer accessory?

• The round spacer is included for installations on a low-profile valve. This will help the fork on the Titan catch the valve handle and secure the device over the valve to properly open and close the valve. 

Can the ZAC36 be installed horizontally / vertically / upside down?

• If it can grip it, you can install it. The Titan can be installed vertically or upside down with no issue. Please ensure you have 3″ clearance to each side from the center of the valve, 1″ clearance between the pipe and the wall, and at least 1.25″ clearance between the valve handle and the pipe.

What is the fork on the Titan made of?

• The fork is made of UV proof acetal homopolymer (model: Dupont Delrin 527UV). This is a very high strength, industrial-grade material commonly used in automobiles. The core of the transmission is actually stainless steel, it is not visible from the outside. This polymer is self lubricated and while it is not as hard as metal, it is extremely tough. This change was made so that it will not grind the metal valve lever (which a metal transmission will). This actually increases the longevity of the device, as proven in testing in our factories. We have done intense stress tests to prove the Titan can survive 20K+ actions under 8nm torque resistance, (a normal valve actuation needs abut 1.5~3.5nm torque, a super stiff valve will need 5~6nm torque: at this level, you can hardly move it by hand). If you were to open and close the valve an average of once a week, that would be 104 actions per year. Per our testing, this 20K actions translates into 192 years of service, even with the toughest valve in the world. With standard valves, you would have even greater longevity.

How do I install the Titan Valve Actuator?

Can I use Z-Wave leak detectors / sensors with the Titan?

• Yes, you can create automations to have the Titan Valve Actuator be closed if a Z-Wave water sensor reports a leak in other areas of your smart home. The sensor and automations would need to be supported by your Z-Wave hub. See compatibility inquiries and answers below.

Can I use the ZAC36 on PVC piping? How about CPVC or PEX piping?

• PVC: Yes. It should work well with most PVC pipes as long as you have a regular ball valve from .5″ to 1.25″ installed on it. You’ll need 3″ clearance to each side from the center of the valve, 1″ clearance between the pipe and the wall, and at least 1.25″ clearance between the valve handle and the pipe.
• PEX: Yes. Most PEX is good enough for the ZAC36; however, it all depends on pipe material quality/hardness. 
• CPVC: No. We don’t recommend using the shut-off with CPVC pipe since this typically isn’t stable enough for the device to work correctly. 

What type of PEX is suitable for the ZAC36?

• While no PEX type is quite as rigid as copper, C is the stiffest of the three PEX types (A, B, and C), making it the most difficult to bend and work with, and it’s often used for smaller repairs or applications where less flexibility is needed.
• PEX C is the recommended strength, with B being a possibility as long as the valve is not on a long stretch of bendable PEX. Depending on how stiff the valve is, the Titan can exert quite a bit of torque, and A and B PEX can bend due to the torque.

Can I use the Titan to control something other than a water valve, like a gas line?

• We have not tested the ZAC36 on a gas line but if the installation meets the Titan’s requirements (see How much space do I need for the Titan Actuator? above), then you should be able to use it.

WIRED LEAK PROBE QUESTIONS

How long is the wired probe leak sensor?

• Water Leak Probe Length: 4.75 feet

Can I use an extension for the wired probe leak sensor?

• Yes, you can use an extension cable for the leak sensor probe. Here are links to the ones our team has tested that work:
  • 3.5mm Headphone Extension Cable (6Ft/1.8M)
  • 2m 3.5mm 4 Position TRRS Headset Extension Cable
  • Headphone Extension Cable, Riksoin 4 Pole 3.5mm
• Please make sure to remove the grey stopper before trying to insert the leak probe! The extender plug should be firmly fixed in the Titan’s 3.5 mm probe input. It’s best to secure it with tape around the plug so it doesn’t slide out. After the installation is complete, please test the probe. Your Titan actuator should automatically close the valve if water is detected and the valve starts in the open position. To cancel the alarm, hold the Z-Wave button until 2 beeps sound to cancel the alarm.

How does the wired leak probe work?

• The wired leak probe works to detect a leak and close the valve. When the leak probe is dried, it will not re-open the valve and you will need to click the button once on the ZAC36 to re-open the valve.

BACKUP BATTERY QUESTIONS

Is there a back-up battery for the Titan in the event of a power outage?

• We recommend adding the backup battery as well to ensure uninterrupted performance in case of a power outage.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

• A fully discharged battery (0%) will need 8-12 hours (more/less) to be fully charged.

POWER OUTAGE QUESTIONS

Can I remove the ZAC36 from my water valve in the event of a power outage?

• Yes. If you lose power and would like to open or close your valve by hand, you would simply take the Titan off your valve. It takes around 15 seconds to take it off and another 15 seconds to put it back on if needed so no manual override is necessary for this device. We recommend taking a look at the video showing how quickly the device installs to illustrate this. We recommend adding the backup battery as well to ensure uninterrupted performance in case of a power outage.

• We recommend adding the backup battery as well to ensure uninterrupted performance in case of a power outage.

Is this device driven open and driven closed or held open when power is on and spring closed when power is off?

• If the device loses power, it will stay in the position it was in last. So if it had your valve open, it will stay open. Once power is restored, it will still stay open (and won’t close unless a leak is detected – back to normal powered mode basically).

What is the detection range of the built in temperature sensor?

• -40° – 257° F

How loud is the sound indicator?

• Sound Indicator: up to 85 dB

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY QUESTIONS

What is the max cycle limit / how often can the Titan be triggered?

• The Titan will last for at least 10 years if it is used once a day. The exact number is in the thousands.

What is the torque of the ZAC36 and how strong is the Titan Water Valve Actuator?

• The torque on the Titan is 6 Newton-meter.

Can I have the Titan partially open and close or is it only full open/close?

• The ZAC36 calibrates to fully open and fully closed only.

Will the ZAC36 act as a signal repeater for other Z-Wave devices in my network?

• Yes. Your Z-Wave hub decides which devices to use to reach other Z-Wave devices. Any non-battery powered Z-Wave device will act as a signal repeater; it would be up to your hub whether or not it will be used in a communication route.

Z-WAVE QUESTIONS

Do I need a Z-Wave hub to buy this device?

• The ZAC36 does not need to be connected to a hub to function with the attached water sensor; however, to control the device remotely, you would need a Z-Wave hub. The ZAC36 communicates via Z-Wave, and would require a hub to allow you to control it remotely.
• To control any of our Z-Wave devices remotely through your smart phone, you’ll need a compatible Z-Wave hub. These devices require a central controller that communicates with them and sends commands. Once you have a controller, you would download that controller’s dedicated app on your phone and control your connected devices through that app. 

Is the ZAC36 compatible with my hub?

• You can find a list of compatible hubs for a given device under the Works With section on the product’s page. Here is the list of hubs compatible with the Titan.

Will the Titan work with my alarm panel?

• The ZAC36 is integrated with and supported by both Alarm.com and Ring.
• However, all other alarm panels will typically only support single switches, door locks, select thermostats, and any authorized items on their list. We would recommend reaching out to your alarm panel company to verify compatibility and to get the latest on any device integrations they may be working on. It would be up to your alarm panel to integrate the device, as it follows Z-Wave protocol and has been Z-Wave certified. There is nothing we can change on our end to have the device be recognized correctly; your alarm panel would have to support the integration. Read more about alarm panel compatibility here.

Can I connect the Titan directly to my Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or other smart speaker?

• No. Smart speakers like Alexa or Google are not equipped with a Z-Wave chip and are not Z-Wave gateway controllers.
• Smart speakers are integrated with certain Z-Wave hubs, like SmartThings or Hubitat, which is how you can have voice control of your Z-Wave devices from your smart speakers.
• Without a compatible Z-Wave hub, no Z-Wave products will function correctly with Alexa or Google alone. 

What security level does the ZAC36 pair to my controller or hub with?

• The highest level of security the Titan supports is S2 Authenticated.

Where do I find all of the Titan’s advanced settings?

What time does the auto / self-test occur on the ZAC36?

• The ZAC36 will perform the self-test as programmed (Parameter 97 or Auto Test Mode setting); if you set the parameter for every 30 days, it will test every 30 days. The actuator will periodically make a 1/8 turn to ensure it is operational to self-test. It does not currently have a time-specific setting to allow you to set the specific time of day for the test. This may be implemented in a future firmware update.

How can I tell what firmware my Titan is running on?

• The firmware that your ZAC36 is shipped with should be printed on the back of the device where the model specifications are. If your hub supports and properly integrates the device, you should also see the firmware listed in your Z-Wave interface.
• Firmware that is listed as 1.01 (or any other value with a 0 in the middle) in the ZAC36’s change log may display as 1.1 in your hub.

How do I update the firmware of my Titan?

• Some Z-Wave hubs have a built-in firmware updater that you can use. Otherwise, we recommend using the PC Controller tool on the Simplicity Studio Software as described here. You will need to register your device in order to have access to Zooz firmware files.

How long does the update take? How do I know when it’s finished?

• Firmware updates should usually take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes depending on connection quality and how much information needs to actually be updated on a given device.
  • If it is taking longer than that, please try to bring the hub / controller closer to the device that is being updated.

What series Z-Wave chip does the ZAC36 use?

• The ZAC36 is a 700 series Z-Wave device. It supports Smart Start pairing (as long as your hub supports it) and pairs with S2 Authenticated security.

Will the Titan be available in other Z-Wave frequencies?

• The Titan is currently available in 908.42 MHz (US) frequency only. We do not currently have plans to release the ZAC36 in EU or AU frequency.

Does the ZAC36 support Z-Wave Long Range?

• Yes, the VER 2.0 ZAC36 supports Z-Wave Long Range (ZWLR). Note: in order to use ZWLR, both the hub and the end device must support ZWLR.

What is the warranty coverage for the Titan?
